Bonito Lake

Bonito Lake, located a short drive from Ruidoso, is a hidden gem nestled within the Lincoln National Forest. This lake is smaller than the others, covering around 12 acres, but it compensates with its unmatched natural beauty and pristine waters.

Originally built as a storage reservoir, Bonito Lake has become a popular destination for fishing, especially for trout anglers. The clear and clean waters create an ideal environment for trout, attracting avid fishermen from all around. It’s worth noting that Bonito Lake was closed to the public for some time due to restoration efforts following a wildfire in 2012. However, the area has been rejuvenated, and visitors can once again experience its tranquility and charm.

Surrounded by dense forests and mountains, Bonito Lake offers a peaceful escape into nature. Hiking trails around the lake provide opportunities for exploring the wilderness, and the quiet atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for birdwatching and wildlife photography.

Bonito Lake History

Bonito Lake has a unique history compared to the other two lakes. It was initially constructed in 1948 by the Bonito Lake Lumber Company as a storage reservoir. The lake’s primary purpose was to provide water for their logging operations in the area.

After the lumber company ceased its operations, the lake changed hands and became the property of the city of Alamogordo, NM. The city used the lake to supplement its water supply. However, in 2012, the Little Bear Fire, a devastating wildfire, struck the region and severely impacted Bonito Lake and its surrounding forests. The fire caused extensive damage, including damage to the lake’s dam and water quality.

Following the wildfire, efforts were undertaken to rehabilitate Bonito Lake and restore it to its former glory. The restoration process involved repairing the dam and implementing measures to protect water quality. It took several years, but the lake was eventually reopened to the public, and today, visitors can once again enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and recreational opportunities.
