Grindstone Lake History
Grindstone Reservoir, originally known as Grindstone Lake, was created in the late 1800s as a small, natural lake. However, in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began enhancing the lake and transforming it into the recreational reservoir it is today. The CCC, a work relief program during the Great Depression, focused on building recreational facilities and improving parks across the country.
The primary purpose of creating Grindstone Reservoir was to provide a reliable water source for the town of Ruidoso. Over the years, the reservoir has evolved into a popular spot for fishing, boating, and outdoor activities, attracting both locals and tourists. Its development and easy accessibility have made it a cherished destination for families and nature enthusiasts.
